Henderson, Pleasant

Pleasant Henderson (1756-1840) was appointed University steward on December 7, 1797. A veteran of the Revolutionary War, Henderson moved to Chapel Hill in 1797, built a seven-room house, and opened a store in his front yard. He remained University steward until 1801, then became a prosperous Chapel Hill merchant until 1828, when debts forced him to sell all of his property. In 1833 he left Chapel Hill for Carroll County, TN (Vickers 25, 37).
